Before the Photographer’s Arrival

It’s vital to keep in mind that the photographer has a busy schedule with multiple photo shoots in a day. Therefore, it’s imperative that your home is ready before their arrival. Additionally, for liability reasons, the photographer cannot assist in arranging personal items, moving furniture, or aiding in cleaning and decluttering the home.

Interiors (Deep Cleaning and Decluttering)

• Thoroughly clean your entire house, addressing any issues in disrepair.
• Remove, replace, or repaint items that are overly “taste-specific.”
• Secure valuables and medications out of sight or in a locked space.
• Clean all windows and open window coverings, unless they hide undesirable views.
• Turn on all lights and turn off ceiling fans.
• Replace any missing or burned-out light bulbs, including kitchen fluorescents and recessed lighting.
• Declutter your fireplace mantel.
• Remove most, if not all, personal and family photos, especially large portraits in prominent areas, and replace them with neutral art if possible.
• Take away all throw rugs and mats.
• Make all beds neatly and minimize the presence of children’s toys, perhaps by storing them in a closet.
• Clear everything from the exterior of the refrigerator.
• Remove or conceal all garbage containers throughout the house.
• Ensure clear kitchen countertops, leaving a maximum of three items per countertop area.
• Clear bathroom countertops of everything, except for floral/plant arrangements or decorative items.
• Use matching towels and place toilet lids in the down position.
• Remove all soap, shampoos, conditioners, shaving items, toothpaste, etc.
• Eliminate all signs of pets, including bowls, rugs, pillows, and litter boxes, which can be placed in the garage or dog run.

Exteriors

• Position a potted plant at the front door and hide trash cans and gardening tools from view.
• Clear the yard of children’s and pets’ toys and neatly coil garden hoses.
• Park all vehicles across the street, not in the driveway or in front of the home.
• Open patio umbrellas and set out cushions.
• Uncover barbecues, pools, and spas.
